Brick Wall Cleaning: Restoring Tired Brickwork on the South Coast

Bring Tired Outdoor Spaces Back To Life

Brickwork is one of those features people stop noticing until it’s gone really tired. A boundary wall, a garden feature, a flint and brick course running along the front of a property: when it’s clean, it lifts the whole space. When it’s grimy, it drags everything down with it. This recent job is a perfect example of just how much difference a proper clean can make.

The Starting Point

This brick wall had seen better days. Years of weather, splashback from the pavement and general build up had left the bricks looking dull, dark and uneven. The lower flint course was almost lost under a layer of grime, and the mortar joints had taken on that grey, washed out look you get when dirt sets in for the long haul.

It’s a really common issue, especially on properties close to the road. Rainwater kicks dirt off the tarmac, algae sets in on the shaded side, and over time the whole wall starts to look much older than it actually is.

The Clean

We approached this one carefully. Brickwork and traditional flint features need a gentler touch than a hard surface like a driveway. Too much pressure in the wrong place can damage soft mortar, chip the brick face or strip out the character that makes these walls so attractive.

We used a controlled clean to lift the grime without harming the surface beneath. Working in sections, we cleared the dirt from the brick faces, brought the flintwork back into view and brightened up the mortar joints, all without damaging the structure.

The Transformation

The difference is striking. The reds and oranges of the bricks are vivid again. The flint course at the base is fully visible, with all its colour and texture on show. The mortar looks clean and crisp, and the wall as a whole looks properly cared for rather than forgotten.

Most importantly, the character of the original brickwork has been brought back, not stripped away. That’s the goal with any traditional feature: a clean that restores, not one that damages.

Why Brickwork Needs the Right Kind of Clean

Brick walls might look tough, but the surface and the mortar holding them together are more delicate than people realise. A clean done badly can cause:

  • Chipped or scarred brick faces
  • Damaged or washed out mortar joints
  • Loose pointing
  • Long term water damage

That’s why we always match the cleaning method to the surface. For brick and flint, that usually means a softer, more controlled approach with the right treatments to lift dirt, algae and lichen safely.

Done properly, a brick wall clean can take years off a property and protect the structure for the long term.
